Blackjack Switch is a casino game based on the classic game of blackjack. The creator of this already popular variation is Geoff Hall, who received his patent for the game in 2009. Hall was mostly preoccupied with counting cards and he was greatly annoyed when he had two weak hands. Special Blackjack Switch Rules There are some rules for this game that are different than for classic Blackjack. First of all, the dealer hits on a soft 17 in this game, meaning that if he has 17 with an Ace in his hand, he always takes another card. In addition, Blackjack pays 1/1 here rather than 3/2, even though there are more blackjacks.

The first time that Hall presented the game was in 2000 at the G2E conference in Las Vegas, and a year later the game received its first true exposure by being offered at Harvey’s Casino. After that Blackjack Switch steadily grew into a true blackjack variation favored by blackjack enthusiasts. The Basics of Blackjack Switch

The concept of Blackjack Switch follows the basic concept of blackjack, which is great, but there is one very significant difference. In Blackjack Switch the player receives two hands at the beginning of each round and has the option to switch the top cards of his two hands, and thus form two stronger or at least one strong hand if both are weak.

The game starts by placing two equal bets after which four cards are dealt, two for each hand. The first thing that the player can do is to switch the positions of the top two cards, and after that the game follows a standard blackjack procedure. Natural blackjack in this variation is paid even-money, and not 3 to 2 as in the classic version.

Six decks are used in general, and the dealer usually hits on soft 17s. All cards are dealt face up. If you hit a blackjack after switching the cards, it doesn’t count as blackjack but as normal 21. If the dealer hits 22, he pushes all hands of the player, except if the player has a natural blackjack. Also, players are allowed to double after splitting, and they can re-split up to 4 hands.

As any other game, Blackjack Switch too has some tips and hints that you can use. There are also many basic and advanced strategies that you can find online and implement in your game, which were created especially for playing Blackjack Switch, but the instructions are too long for this article. For now you will do fine with these basic tips:

• Stand on hard 17s or higher, but hit soft 17s and lower.
• Always hit if you have a pair of 4s, Ace and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, no matter what the dealer has.
• If you have anything between 17 and 21 you should always stand, no matter what the dealer has.
• If you get a pair of Aces, always split them.
• Stand on all soft 19s and 20s.

Blackjack switch is a blackjack variation with low house edge. The two main softwares offering the game are Playtech and Grand Virtual. However, game play is a bit slower because of additional switch decisions.

Blackjack Switch Rules

During each round player plays two hands at the same time as in multi-hand blackjack. Player places two bets of equal size on both hands. Player is dealt two cards on both blackjack hands, and one of dealer’s two cards is visible as in regular blackjack. The twist is that before playing these hands the player may switch the top cards between the hands. For example player is dealt hands 8,7 and 4,A. The player may switch 7 and A to get 8,A and 4,7. After making the switch, the player plays both hands according to normal rules. The player may hit, double down and split on both hands. To compensate this advantage the dealer has the following benefits:

• Dealer 22 pushes all hands except player blackjack

• Blackjack pays 1:1 like a normal winning hand

• The dealer hits soft 17

Optimal Strategy

The correct switch decision depends on the hand values and dealer’s upcard. Usually you try to improve both hands by switching. For example 8,7 = 15 and 4,10 = 14 is a worse combination than 8,10 = 18 and 4,7 = 11.
